Taught by Laura Smith

"Dufy is pleasure!" So said Gertrude Stein about the French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy (1877 – 1953). His effervescent, joyous paintings radiate color and light, capturing a world of vibrant hues and dynamic compositions. However, Dufy was more radical and visually avant-garde than he is often credited for, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in his time.

In this immersive class, we will take a deep dive into the unique way Dufy perceived the world and how he masterfully used color and calligraphic mark-making to communicate his vision. We will explore his innovative techniques and the artistic principles that make his work so captivating.

Dufy's flower paintings, in particular, are some of his most beloved creations. The delicacy and richness of floral subjects are ideally suited to his uplifting, lyrical style. Drawing inspiration from these exquisite works, we will reinterpret his approach to still life using mixed media.

Guided by our experienced tutor, Laura Smith, you will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials. Feel free to use your preferred pencils, paints, or other mediums. Laura will demonstrate how to build up layers using pencil, gouache, pastels, and even collage, helping you create richly textured, unique pieces of art.

As Dufy once said, “What I wish to show when I paint is the way I see things with my eyes and in my heart.” Let yourself be inspired by his exuberance and delight, and discover the joy of bringing his vibrant style into your own artistic practice.

This class is designed for artists of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Join us and let the radiant joy of Raoul Dufy elevate your creativity!
